10 Things to Do at Crater Lake

Crater Lake is a geographical marvel. Formed by an extinct volcano, it’s one of the most beautiful lakes in the world, and something everyone should see. If you’re planning a visit to the lake, here’s a list of 10 things you can do to make the most of your time there.

 

  1. Take pictures of Wizard Island

There are many wonderful views around the lake, and Wizard Island is one of the biggest attractions. It is a volcanic cone that rises majestically out of the cobalt blue water and is visible from any spot on the 33-mile loop around the lake.

  1. Phantom Ship

This is a jagged rock formation near the southern shore of the lake. It has an impressive silhouette that resembles a ghost pirate ship!

  1. Plaikni Falls

Not far from the east rim of the crater, you’ll find Plaikni Falls, one of the most beautiful falls in Oregon.  There’s a trail that will take you to the falls, and it’s an easy one to hike, as it only has a 100’ rise.

  1. Swimming

If you’re hardy enough to brave the chilly water (57° in the summer), visit Cleetwood Cove, where you can take a dip in the deepest lake in the United States.

  1. Crater Lake Pinnacles

This is a spectacular geological formation located in a canyon approximately 7 miles from the rim of the lake and is easily accessible via a walking trail less than a mile long.

  1. Watch the Sunrise

For those who love the sight of a beautiful sunrise or sunset, Watchman Peak pullout or the top of the peak is the best place to watch the show.

  1. Enjoy the Night Sky

Because of the remote location of the park, it’s considered one of the best places in the U.S. to view the moon, stars, and planets.

  1. Garfield Peak

This peak is 7,976 feet above sea level and is one of the highest spots on the rim. There’s a fairly steep trail that takes you to the top, but it’s not terribly difficult to hike up and the views are incredible.

  1. The Watchman Lookout Station

Built in 1932, this was originally created to serve as a fire lookout. It’s on Watchman Peak, 1,849 feet above the surface of the lake.

  1. Explore the Fauna

Crater Lake National Park is home to some extremely resistant species of trees, some of which are ancient. Take some time to look around, and you’ll certainly be impressed.
