The Pillowman centers on a writer in an unnamed totalitarian state who is arrested due to the gruesome content of his short stories.
As an audience member, follow along as the author, Katurian, is interrogated by two detectives, Ariel and Tupolski, because his stories bear a resemblance to a recent slew of child murders. When Katurian hears that his brother, Michal, has confessed to (and implicated him in) the murders, he resigns himself to being executed but still wants to save his stories from destruction.
The play contains both narrations and reenactments of several of Katurian’s stories. The result is an urgent work of theatrical bravura and an unflinching examination of the very nature and purpose of art.
