Not-to-be-Missed Stops in Klamath County According to the Locals
It’s the age-old traveler’s question: How do you figure out where to go and what to do when visiting someplace new? Sure, you can scour the internet or check-in on social media. But if you really want to know where to best spend your time and money, the best thing to do is ask someone who lives there. Be it your first time or your one hundred and first, ask a local.
So if you’re visiting Klamath County, here are some of the places, things, and activities that locals love.
Where to Adventure

Hike Hogback Mountain
There are a few different options to get to the summit and back, ranging from 3.5 to 5-miles. But however you get to the top of Hogback Mountain, you’re going to climb roughly 1,800 feet. Besides a great bit of exercise, the views from the mountain that looms over Klamath Falls are pretty spectacular. Be on the lookout for wildflowers and wildlife as well. The hike is dog-friendly but might not be the best for younger or inexperienced hikers as some trail sections are steep with loose rocks. Also bring plenty of water, especially in summer.
Mitchell Monument
Here’s one for history buffs: Between November 1944 and April 1945, Japan launched thousands of experimental balloon bombs intended to wreak havoc along the West Coast of the United States. Over the years, well over three hundred of those balloons have been found in twenty-six states between Canada and Mexico. The Mitchell Monument somberly commemorates the only place on the continent where death resulted from enemy action during World War II. The historic landmark is located about 65 miles North-East of Klamath Falls and also offers fishing, hiking, and wildlife viewing opportunities nearby.
Odell & Crescent Lake
Any time of year is a great time of year to head up to Odell and Crescent Lakes. In winter, miles of groomed snowmobile and snowshoe trails explore every corner of the areas around and between the two lakes. During summer, the lakes are brimming with water recreation activities. Just about anything you want to do in or on the water can be done between those two lakes. That includes fishing! A handful of resorts and lodges, including the namesake Odell Lake Lodge & Resort, offer cabins, equipment rentals, a general store, and more.
Wood River Wetland
Hiking, birding, canoeing, hunting, mountain biking, and some of the best trout fishing in the Klamath Basin are all reasons to visit the 3,200-acre Wood River Wetland. A half-mile paved trail in the wetland area, along with 10-miles of navigable levees, provides all the access to the area you’ll need. For paddlers, it’s only a short half-mile paddle to the Wood River where you can travel up or downstream to your heart’s content. There are also picnic tables, benches, and interpretive signs throughout the area.

Basin Martini Bar (aka BMB)
The Basin Martini Bar, or BMB to locals, has been the cocktail bar of choice in downtown Klamath Falls since opening in 2008. In addition to the swanky vibe and excellent ambiance, the food & drink options are also top notch. From fish tacos to a darn delicious burger, there’s something for everyone. And the cocktails are inventive and upscale; be sure to try one of their signature mules! BMB is the complete package for those looking to relax and unwind, hit the town, or celebrate a special occasion.
Taqueria Jalisciense
If you’re looking for authentic Mexican grub, the place to go in Klamath Falls is Taqueria Jaliscience. The eatery isn’t decorated to give you the faux-feeling that you’re somewhere you’re not. That’s the food’s job, and it does so with aplomb.
Terra Veg Vegan Eatery
A strong case can be made that the charming, family-friendly, Terra Veg Vegan Eatery is the official place to dine if you’re looking for a vegan or vegetarian meal in Klamath Falls. The quaint eatery offers a full, well-rounded menu geared toward Mediterranean cuisine using ingredients from local farms.
The Falls Taphouse
This one became a local favorite in a hurry. With over 30 craft beer, cider, and wine options on tap and an insanely good beer cooler, they were charging hard out of the gate. But with view-laden rooftop tables, ample outdoor seating, and onsite food trucks including the always wonderful Wubba’s BBQ, the Falls Taphouse is a dream for any and everyone looking to acquire an artisanal buzz.
